MBW was contracted by Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to assess the condition of Karuma Bridge. The Karuma Bridge, constructed in 1964, is a vital link on the Kampala-Gulu/Arua highway, connecting Uganda’s Southern and Central regions to the North and Northwest. The overall project objective of the assignment is to assess the condition of the existing old steel-concrete composite bridge to ascertain the residual value and rehabilitation interventions required to sustain the bridge until the proposed new bridge is constructed. This will be done by carrying out detailed inspections and testing (Destructive and Non-Destructive) of the bridge elements to confirm the capacity and durability of the existing bridge to cope with the current and future traffic and environmental loads until the new Karuma bridge is commissioned (5 -10 years).
